YouTube Blocks Background Playback for Non-Premium Users on Third-Party Browsers

Background Playback Now Limited to Premium Users

Since YouTube Premium launched in 2018, background playback has remained one of its most popular features. The feature lets users keep listening to videos even after they minimize the browser or turn off their phone screens. However, recent reports say Google has now blocked this feature for non-Premium users on third-party mobile browsers.

Earlier, some free users accessed background playback through select mobile browsers. With the latest change, YouTube has tightened its rules. As a result, the platform now pushes users more strongly toward paid subscriptions.

Google Confirms Policy Update

According to Android Authority, a Google spokesperson confirmed the update. The spokesperson said YouTube now restricts background playback to Premium subscribers only.

“Background playback is designed exclusively for YouTube Premium members,” the spokesperson explained. “Some non-Premium users accessed it earlier through mobile web browsers. We updated the experience to maintain consistency across platforms.”

Audio Stops When Screen Turns Off

After the update, audio stops immediately when non-Premium users switch apps or turn off their phone screens. User reports on Reddit and X show that the issue mainly affects third-party browsers such as Samsung Internet, Brave, and Vivaldi.

Many users report that older workarounds no longer function. In some cases, a brief “MediaOngoingActivity” notification appears before the media controls disappear.

Old Fixes No Longer Work

Users say common solutions like clearing browser cache or changing Picture-in-Picture settings no longer help. Because of this, many believe Google wants to convert free users into paying subscribers through this update.
