Sony may postpone PS6 launch to 2029 due to RAM shortage

According to reports, Sony could delay the release of its next-generation console, the PlayStation 6. Earlier rumours suggested a 2027 launch, but new information indicates the company may push it to 2028 or even 2029 because rising AI demand is reducing memory supply.

Possible PS6 Delay

Recently, an industry analyst said Sony might extend the PlayStation 5’s lifecycle and introduce the PS6 after 2028. A Bloomberg report also claims the company could shift the launch window to as late as 2029.

Sources say growing use of artificial intelligence has created RAM shortages and increased hardware component prices, which may force Sony to postpone the console.

Impact on Sony’s Release Schedule

If the PS6 arrives after 2027, Sony’s traditional release pattern will break. Since the PlayStation 3 era, the company has launched a new home console roughly every seven years. Sony released the PS5 in 2020, and Microsoft launched the Xbox Series S and Series X the same year. Both systems are now nearly six years old.

Industry-Wide Chip Concerns

The report also suggests Nintendo could raise the price of the Switch 2 in 2026. The hybrid console launched last year in the US at $449.99 and has sold more than 17 million units so far.

Sony has not officially announced details about its next console, although reports indicate the company is developing the PS6. Earlier leaks suggested the PS6 and the next-generation Xbox might arrive in 2027.

However, another Insider Gaming report says the global chip shortage, worsened by AI demand, could delay upcoming consoles from both Sony and Microsoft. Rising RAM and memory costs have become a major challenge for platform companies.

Meanwhile, AMD CEO Lisa Su hinted that the next Xbox, powered by a custom AMD chip, could launch in 2027, though Microsoft has not fully finalized that timeline internally.
