🎮 Play PS5 Games Without a Console
Sony has rolled out a major update for its PlayStation Portal handheld device, turning it into an almost standalone gaming system. Nearly two years after launch, PlayStation Plus Premium users can now stream PS5 games directly from the cloud, eliminating the need to connect to a console.
🌍 Global Update and New Features
The update began rolling out globally on November 5 (6pm PT / November 6, 7:30am IST). It introduces a redesigned interface, 3D audio support, enhanced accessibility options, and several quality-of-life improvements.
This upgrade marks a major milestone for the PlayStation Portal, which first launched in November 2023.
🕹️ Stream Thousands of PS5 Games from the Cloud
With this update, users can now access thousands of PS5 titles directly via cloud streaming, including
Grand Theft Auto V, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Resident Evil 4, Astro Bot, Borderlands 4, and Fortnite.
Additionally, popular titles from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalogue and Classics Catalogue such as
Hogwarts Legacy, Cyberpunk 2077, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, God of War Ragnarök, and Sword of the Sea are also available to stream.
Access to these games requires an active PlayStation Plus Premium subscription.
🧭 New Interface and Cloud Section
The new interface features three main sections — Remote Play, Cloud Streaming, and Search.
Through the new Cloud Streaming home screen, users can browse and play games directly from their personal library or the PlayStation Plus collection.
For smooth gameplay, Sony recommends a minimum internet speed of 5Mbps, while 4K quality streaming requires up to 52Mbps.
🔊 3D Audio and Smart New Features
This system update also introduces 3D audio headset support, improved accessibility, multiplayer invites, in-game store access, and new tools such as a network status page and passcode lock feature.
📈 A New Milestone for Sony
According to Sony executive Takuro Fushimi, the PlayStation Portal has become the most-used device for PS5 cloud streaming, surpassing even mobile phones and tablets.
Although the device still doesn’t support offline gameplay, this update allows players to enjoy PS5 games anytime, anywhere — even when their console is powered off or being used by another account.
This marks a major step toward making the PlayStation Portal a truly independent handheld gaming device.
