OpenAI has announced plans to expand its presence in India. The company will open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru by the end of this year. The move will support its existing office in New Delhi and further strengthen operations across the country.
Along with the expansion, the company has partnered with the Tata Group to build AI-ready data centre infrastructure in India. Under the agreement, OpenAI will become the first customer of Tata Consultancy Services’ (TCS) HyperVault data centre business. The project will begin with 100 megawatts of capacity and could scale up to 1 gigawatt in the future. OpenAI also plans to launch its OpenAI Certification programme in India, starting with TCS.
Expansion of OpenAI in India
During the AI Impact Summit 2026 held in Delhi, the ChatGPT maker confirmed it will launch offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru this year. The company already operates in New Delhi and says the new locations will help it better serve Indian users and business partners.
OpenAI also revealed that more than 100 million people in India use ChatGPT every week, highlighting the country’s growing importance to the company.
Collaboration With Tata Group for AI Infrastructure
OpenAI has joined hands with the Tata Group to develop AI-ready data centre capacity in India. As part of the collaboration, TCS will provide infrastructure through its HyperVault data centres. According to OpenAI, this will allow its advanced AI models to run securely within the country.
The Tata Group also plans to gradually deploy ChatGPT Enterprise among its employees, beginning with TCS staff. In addition, TCS intends to use OpenAI’s Codex to standardise AI-native software development across teams.
OpenAI Certifications and Education Partnerships
OpenAI will expand its OpenAI Certification programme in India, with TCS becoming the first organisation outside the United States to participate. The certification aims to help professionals develop practical AI skills.
The company has also formed academic partnerships with major Indian institutions, including the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM Ahmedabad), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, and Pearl Academy.
