Google Pixel call recording expands to more countries ahead of global rollout

The Call Recording feature in the Google Pixel Phone app is now reaching more countries. After returning to select markets last year, the option is starting to appear outside the United States. Recent reports say some users in Europe can already access it on their devices. The company stated it plans to complete the rollout in all supported regions by the end of February, depending on local laws and user-consent requirements.

Expansion in Europe

According to a 9to5Google report, users in several European countries have begun receiving the feature, indicating a wider international expansion. Google also confirmed it will enable call recording in all permitted regions before the end of February.

Google first announced the feature’s return in September and began a broader rollout in November. At that time, availability remained mostly limited to the United States, and many European users did not receive it.

Now, users in Germany, Italy, Spain, Romania, and France report that call recording is active on their phones. Around the launch of the Pixel 10a, the company again said it would bring the feature to all eligible markets before the device becomes widely available.

Supported devices and functionality

The feature works on Google Pixel 6 and newer models running Android 14 or later. It does not rely on artificial intelligence and remains separate from the Gemini Nano-based Call Notes feature available on some newer devices. It also does not create transcripts or summaries of calls.

How to enable call recording

Users can open the Phone app, go to Settings, and select Call Recording under the Call Assist section to activate it. During a call, pressing the record button starts recording. Before recording begins, the phone plays an audio announcement to notify all participants.

Users can also choose to automatically record calls from unknown numbers. The app allows recordings to be deleted automatically after 7, 14, or 30 days, or stored permanently.

Storage and legal requirements

Saved recordings appear in the Phone app’s home tab with a microphone icon and built-in playback options. Google notes that availability depends on local regulations. Some countries prohibit call recording entirely, while others require consent from everyone on the call. To help users comply, the app plays a voice notification before recording starts.
