Google May Bring Gemini Split-Screen Feature to Regular Smartphones

Google plans to expand the Gemini app’s split-screen support to non-foldable smartphones. The company wants Gemini to run side-by-side with another app on normal phones. Until now, the feature worked mainly on foldables and tablets with large screens.

Google is gradually adding this multitasking capability to more devices. Users will also be able to share their screen and ask the AI chatbot questions about the second app opened in split view.

Gemini Split-Screen on Standard Phones

According to an Android Authority report, Google is expanding Gemini’s compatibility step by step. At present, non-foldable phone users can open Gemini in split-screen mode. However, they cannot properly use two apps together if one of them is Gemini.

This may change with Google app version 17.5.42.ve.arm64. During testing on a Pixel 9, Gemini worked alongside another app in split-screen view. The system also shows a new option when users activate this mode.

New Screen-Sharing Option

Instead of showing a blank screen, the app now displays a “Share screen and app content” button. After tapping it, Gemini reads the content open in the second app and answers questions about it.

This method feels smoother than the earlier overlay feature, which blocked the display while the assistant responded.

How the Feature Works

The feature behaves differently depending on the second app:

  • Browser apps: Gemini reads the URL and answers questions using webpage information.
  • Non-web apps: Gemini captures a screenshot and analyzes visual details. The assistant hides its own interface to avoid confusion.

Limited Rollout for Now

Gadgets 360 staff did not find the feature on their devices, including the recently launched iQOO 15. This suggests Google is rolling it out gradually. The company has not officially confirmed whether it will expand the feature beyond Pixel smartphones.
