Google Chrome Gets Split View, Built-In PDF Markup Tools and New Productivity Features

Google has released several productivity upgrades for its Chrome browser. The Mountain View-based company says these features will help both regular and enterprise users manage tabs more efficiently and complete tasks faster. The update includes the Split View tab-management option, PDF annotation tools and other improvements.

Split View for Easier Tab Management

The highlight of the update is the Split View feature. It allows users to open two tabs side by side within the same Chrome window. Users no longer need to manually resize separate browser windows. They can right-click a tab, select Split View and pair it with another open tab. Chrome then automatically arranges both pages evenly across the screen.

According to Google, the feature makes it easier to compare documents, check references while writing or work across multiple web apps simultaneously. The company had been testing the feature for some time, and a few users accessed it before the official announcement.

Built-In PDF Annotation Tools in Chrome

Google has also enhanced Chrome’s built-in PDF viewer. Users can now highlight text, add comments and perform basic markup directly inside the browser.

When a PDF opens in Chrome, an annotation toolbar appears at the top. From there, users can highlight text, draw, add notes and make minor edits without downloading the file.

Save Files Directly to Google Drive

The update also introduces a Save to Google Drive feature. With this option, users can store files or PDFs directly to their Google Drive account from Chrome.

Users can save content to the cloud in just a few clicks, eliminating the need to download files first and upload them later. Chrome uploads the file to the linked Google Drive account and places it in a dedicated “Save from Chrome” folder. This makes it easier to access files across devices and helps reduce local storage usage.

Rollout Details

Google has started rolling out these features in the latest desktop version of Chrome. Since the rollout is phased, it may take some time before the update reaches all users.
