Amazon has officially launched Vega OS, its in-house developed operating system for Fire TV devices. This marks a significant shift from the Android-based Fire OS. Unlike its predecessor, Vega OS is Linux-based and built using React Native, making it faster, more efficient, and easier for developers to create apps.
The first device to come with Vega OS out of the box is the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, which supports 4K resolution and HDR10+, offering an enhanced viewing experience. Alongside the new OS, Amazon has introduced a Cloud App program, helping developers port Android apps to Vega OS easily. For the first nine months, Amazon will also cover the costs associated with cloud streaming services, incentivizing app development.
However, Vega OS comes with some limitations. It does not support sideloading, and users can install apps only from the Amazon Appstore. On the positive side, Vega OS will support gaming services like Xbox Game Streaming and Luna, expanding the platform’s entertainment capabilities.
Older Fire TV devices running Android-based Fire OS will continue to receive support, ensuring current users are not left behind. With Vega OS, Amazon is taking a significant step toward reducing Android dependency and gaining more control over performance, updates, and its ecosystem.
