Apple has introduced AirPlay video support in CarPlay through the iOS 26.4 beta update. The company revealed the feature after updating its official developer documentation. Supported cars can now show video content on the CarPlay screen.
Apple will limit the feature for safety. Even so, the update significantly improves in-car entertainment.
Watch Videos on the Car Screen
A OneJailbreak report first spotted the change. Apple updated the CarPlay Developer Guide and explained the feature. Users can stream videos from an iPhone directly to the car display.
The system works only when the vehicle is parked. Apple designed this rule to meet safety regulations. The company avoids adding standalone video apps to CarPlay. Instead, it streams content through AirPlay from the iPhone.
Compatibility Will Depend on the Car
Apple also clarified hardware requirements. Automakers must add AirPlay video support to their infotainment systems. Because of this, not every CarPlay vehicle will receive the feature. Availability will depend on the car’s hardware.
The documentation suggests Apple is preparing broader entertainment options for CarPlay alongside iOS 26.4. The update remains in beta for now.
Support for Voice-Based AI Apps
The update also expands app support inside CarPlay. Reports say Apple now allows voice-based conversational AI apps on the platform.
These apps must rely mainly on voice interaction. They must answer questions and perform tasks after launch.
CarPlay now supports multiple app categories, including:
- audio
- communication
- driving tasks
- fuelling
- navigation
- public safety
- voice conversational apps
