Apple TV+ is Now Just “Apple TV”

Several branding changes have been observed in the streaming world recently. Max was reverted back to HBO Max by Warner Bros. Discovery, while Hulu was repositioned as the global general entertainment brand within Disney+ by Disney. Now, a similar step has been taken by Apple, as the “+” has been removed from Apple TV+. From now on, the service will simply be referred to as Apple TV.

Quiet Announcement via F1 Movie Press Release

The rebranding was quietly revealed at the end of a press release related to Apple’s upcoming F1 movie, which is scheduled to be released on Apple TV on December 12. The company stated: “Apple TV+ is now simply Apple TV, with a vibrant new identity.” The news was delivered with minimal fanfare, consistent with Apple’s understated approach to communication.

Reason Behind Dropping the “+”

The “+” was removed to maintain a clean and minimal branding style. However, potential confusion can be caused by this change, as the naming structure has now become less clear. While the decision simplifies the name, it also adds a layer of ambiguity for new and existing users.

How the Service Works for Users

It has been stated by Apple that: “Apple TV is available on the Apple TV app.” Customers who purchase a new iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV device are offered three months of Apple TV for free.

In practice, the following sequence occurs:

  • An Apple TV device is purchased.
  • The Apple TV app is opened.
  • Apple TV content is accessed.

It should be noted that not all content available in the Apple TV app is included in the subscription. Separate purchases or rentals are required for some shows and movies.

F1 Movie Availability

It has been highlighted in the press release that the F1 movie can already be purchased through the Apple TV app, even before its official streaming debut on Apple TV. This advance availability provides flexibility to viewers but adds to the naming confusion.

Current Confusion and Future Outlook

The rebranding has not yet been fully implemented. Multiple references to “Apple TV+” are still found on the service’s website and the App Store listing for the Apple TV app. If a refreshed Apple TV hardware is introduced in the near future, greater confusion may arise. Essentially, it could mean that:

  • An Apple TV device is purchased,
  • The Apple TV app is opened, and
  • Apple TV is watched—powered by Apple TV.

This recursive naming may be confusing for users unfamiliar with Apple’s ecosystem.
