NPCI, OpenAI, and Razorpay Partnership
Indian users will soon be able to shop and make payments while interacting with AI chatbots like ChatGPT. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the government body that manages the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), has partnered with OpenAI and Razorpay to enable payments directly within ChatGPT.
Razorpay’s Agentic Payments Feature
Razorpay has revealed that it has started private beta testing of the Agentic Payments feature. This feature allows users to complete transactions without leaving the AI platform. The initiative comes at a time when Google and Perplexity have announced their own AI-powered payment services.
According to Reuters, the pilot will examine how UPI can be used “to autonomously complete transactions on behalf of users in a safe, controlled, and reliable manner.”
New Features Supporting the Pilot
This functionality will leverage UPI’s recently launched tools:
- Reserve Pay – allows users to set aside funds for specific merchants.
- UPI Circle – enables payments within an app without leaving it.
For the pilot, Airtel Payments Bank and Axis Bank will act as banking partners. BigBasket (Tata Group) and Vodafone Idea will be among the first platforms to adopt the feature.
Beyond ChatGPT: Other AI Chatbots Ready
Razorpay CEO Harshil Mathur stated that the new AI payment system has also been tested with other chatbots, including Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude. However, a full rollout may take a few weeks.

Security and Data Privacy
Currently, no revenue-sharing model has been announced for India’s AI-powered payment plan. Importantly, AI companies like OpenAI and Google will not have access to payment data. Every transaction will require user authorization via two-factor authentication to ensure security.
