New Sora App Update Lets Users Manage Likeness and Characters

OpenAI has announced updates to its Sora app, introducing changes to the copyright policy and giving users more control over the use of their likeness. Under the new policy, copyright holders no longer need to opt out of the app. Instead, the AI video model will generate a copyrighted character only if the rights holder has opted in. This change could lead to the removal of numerous videos featuring popular characters such as Pikachu, SpongeBob, Power Rangers, and Michael Jackson.

Changes in Sora App’s Copyright Policy

Since its launch, the Sora app has been popular among users. This invite-only iOS app, powered by the Sora 2 AI model, allows users to create 10-second videos featuring random objects, fictional characters (including copyrighted ones), or even themselves (which requires video upload and identity verification). The Cameo feature lets users generate videos of other people, provided they have given consent.

However, shortly after its debut, the app faced criticism from both copyright holders and users. Initially, Sora was launched with an opt-out policy, requiring rights holders to explicitly state if they did not want their characters to be generated by the AI model.

Greater Control for Copyright Holders

In response, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman mentioned in a blog post that copyright holders will now have more granular control over character generation. This new system works similarly to the opt-in model for likeness but includes additional customization, allowing rights holders to specify how their characters can be used within the app.

This update marks a significant shift in handling AI-generated content, aiming to balance creative freedom for users with intellectual property rights.
